Each way calculator
An each way bet is two bets of the same stake: one to win and one to place. Enter your stake per part, the odds and the place terms, and this each way bet calculator shows what each part pays.
What a £5 each way bet pays
A £5 each way bet costs £10. If your pick wins, both parts pay. If it only places, the place part pays at a fraction of the odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5, and the win part loses.
Placing doesn't always mean you make a profit. At short odds the place part can pay back less than your total £10 stake. Try a 2/1 shot that places at 1/5 odds and you'll see.
When does an each way bet make a profit?
If your pick only places, the win part loses and the place part pays at a fraction of the odds. This table shows what the place part returns on a £5 each way bet, which costs £10.
| Odds | Return at 1/4 | Profit at 1/4 | Return at 1/5 | Profit at 1/5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2/1 | £7.50 | -£2.50 | £7.00 | -£3.00 |
| 3/1 | £8.75 | -£1.25 | £8.00 | -£2.00 |
| 4/1 | £10.00 | £0.00 | £9.00 | -£1.00 |
| 5/1 | £11.25 | £1.25 | £10.00 | £0.00 |
| 8/1 | £15.00 | £5.00 | £13.00 | £3.00 |
| 12/1 | £20.00 | £10.00 | £17.00 | £7.00 |
| 20/1 | £30.00 | £20.00 | £25.00 | £15.00 |
At 1/4 terms you break even on a place at 4/1. At 1/5 terms you break even at 5/1. Below those prices, a placed horse still loses you money overall.
Each way terms explained
The place terms tell you two things: how many places pay, and what fraction of the odds the place part pays at. "1/5, 3 places" means the first three home pay the place part at a fifth of the win odds.
Terms depend on the number of runners and the type of race, and bookmakers often pay extra places on big races. The terms on your bet slip are the ones that count.

What is an each way bet?
An each way bet is two bets of the same stake: one on your pick to win and one on it to place. A £5 each way bet costs £10. If it places, the place part pays a fraction of the odds, usually 1/4 or 1/5.
What are the usual each way terms in UK horse racing?
Any race with 5 to 7 runners pays 2 places at 1/4 odds. Races with 8 or more runners pay 3 places at 1/5, except bigger handicaps: 12 to 15 runners pay 3 places at 1/4 and 16 or more pay 4 places at 1/4. Bookmakers often offer extra places, so always check.
Can I bet each way on an accumulator?
Yes. Pick Accumulator or any multiple on the main bet calculator and switch on each way. The win part needs every selection to win. The place part needs every selection to win or place.
What is a Rule 4 deduction?
If a horse is withdrawn after you bet, the bookmaker takes a set amount in pence from every pound of your winnings. Enter that number and the calculator applies it to both parts.
